The M14: Still Going Strong

A while back, I linked a good piece by Tactical Life on the M16. The site now has a similarly in-depth feature out on the venerable M14, which is still finding plenty of use as a Designated Marksman Rifle in today’s military.

The Taliban figured out pretty early on that the M16’s effective range was less than 500 meters, so they took to hanging out just outside that range and sniping at our guys with .30 caliber rifles. This led the Marines, among others, to pull their old M14s out of storage for use in Afghanistan, and they eventually selected a much upgraded M14 variant, the MK14 EBR as their DMR.

Fulton Armory makes a pretty sweet civilian version of the MK14 EBR, but one of theirs will set you back close to $4,000. You’ll also have to wait 6 to 8 weeks for the regular version and over 8 months for the high-end one. Still, a man can dream.

Anyway, go check out the Tactical Life piece, and then let us know in the comments what your dream M14 is, if you have one.
