Youngster Catches Catfish Bigger than he is for Texas Lake Record

Little 7-year old Tucker Martin isn’t much bigger than the heavyweight flathead catfish he caught recently using his last minnow bait on Texas’ Lake Mineral Wells.

Tucker with other family members were targeting crappies when the big catfish struck.

“I thought [the hook] was stuck to a stick,” says Tucker. “Then I thought it was a shark.”

The young angler battled the fish for 15 minutes before the fish rolled at the surface behind the family fishing boat.

“He started screaming when he saw it,” explained Thadd Martin, Tucker’s dad. “It dove back down and we fought him for another five minutes before we got him in the boat.”

The giant catfish was near 40 inches long and weighed a hefty 25 pounds.

Tucker’s catfish may become a junior angler record for Lake Mineral Wells. The catfish record at Lake Mineral Wells is over 53 pounds.
