mTherm Handguards at 2018 SHOT Show Range Day
Kevin Felts 01.22.18
SHOT Show 2018 Range Day kicked off with a bang. Upon arriving and looking through various products, one that caught my attention rather quickly was the mTherm handguard by Ascendance International.
What makes this handguard so wonderful? It is made from a non-metalic material which does not absorb heat like traditional handguards.
Of course this sounded too good to be true, so the guys at the display let me fire off a few rounds of 300 Blackout. Sure enough, after firing a few rounds, the barrel was hot to the touch but the handguard did not change temperature.
Keep in mind there was a line of people that had been shooting the rifle before me and there was a line behind me.
Sizes
These specifications are from a packet that was picked up at the range:
M4 Standard carbine
- Length: 7 inches
- Weight: 5.6 ounces
- Standard two-piece drop in.
M4 Free Floating
- Length: 13 inches
- Weight: Varies
- Design: Two-piece free floating
Configurable
- Length: 7, 9, 11, 13 inches
- Weight: Varies
- Two piece free floating
The mTherm representative explained that he could not disclose exactly what it was made from. All he would say is the material is non-metallic and will not absorb heat like a standard aluminum handguard.
In short, this is not your typical AR-15 rail handguard. From what I was told, even if the rifle is so hot you cannot hold it, you should be able to hold the handguard.
Maybe Iraqveteran888 can do a meltdown video with the handguard?
