AllOutdoor Review: Wiley X WX Apex Shooting Glasses

The line between dedicated shooting glasses and everyday sunglasses has always been a tricky one to walk. Too tactical-looking, and you feel awkward wearing them anywhere but the range. Too casual, and they might not offer the protection you need when rounds are going downrange. The Wiley X WX Apex shooting glasses attempts to bridge this gap with a design that works for both the shooting range and everyday life. I recently took a pair for a spin to see if they live up to their premium price tag.

What’s in the Box: Wiley X WX Apex Shooting Glasses

The WX Apex comes packaged with the glasses themselves, a pair of ANSI Z87.1+ certified removable side shields, and a microfiber drawstring bag for storage and cleaning. Right away, the inclusion of the side shields stands out as a thoughtful addition for those who want extra protection during range sessions.

First Impressions: Wiley X WX Apex Shooting Glasses

Style-wise, the WX Apex hits the mark. With their gloss black frame and blue mirror lenses, they have a modern, sporty look that doesn’t scream “tactical” or “shooting glasses.” This makes them versatile enough to wear while driving or for general outdoor activities without feeling out of place.

The build quality feels substantial – these definitely don’t come across as cheap glasses. The frame has a solid, premium feel while remaining lightweight enough for all-day wear.

Range Time: Wiley X WX Apex Shooting Glasses

I took the WX Apex out for a range session to put them through their paces. The first thing that stood out was the exceptional clarity of the Captivate Polarized Blue Mirror lenses. Everything appears crisp and defined, which is exactly what you want when focusing on targets downrange.

The polarization worked well to cut glare, particularly useful on bright days when sunlight reflects off brass casings scattered across the range. The blue mirror tint was effective without being too dark – I could still see clearly in partially shaded areas. One issue I encountered was the lens height. These lenses run tall, and they rest on your cheeks when worn. A friend who tried them on mentioned the same observation. While this isn’t necessarily a deal-breaker, it’s something to be aware of if you’re considering these glasses.

For a single range session, the WX Apex remained comfortable enough. The dual-injected rubber nose pads do their job keeping the glasses in place, even when moving between shooting positions. However, the rubberized plastic around the ears isn’t as cushioned as it could be. After extended wear, I began to notice pressure points. For a premium pair of glasses at this price point, I expected a bit more padding in this area or some adjustability. The glasses fit my head well, though they should accommodate larger head sizes too based on the specifications.

Versatility is where the WX Apex shines. I wore them driving and for general outdoor use beyond the range, and they performed admirably in both settings. The ability to remove the side shields transforms them from dedicated shooting glasses to everyday sunglasses in seconds. While I didn’t personally use the side shields during my testing, their inclusion is extremely thoughtful for those who want extra protection during high-risk activities. It’s a feature that adds significant value to the package.

Though my time with these glasses has been limited, they appear to be built to last. The Triloid™ Nylon frame feels tough, and the shatterproof polycarbonate lenses should stand up to impacts far beyond what normal sunglasses can handle. The ANSI Z87.1+ certification isn’t just marketing fluff – these glasses are legitimately rated for serious impact protection. I didn’t experience any durability issues during my testing, but long-term performance remains to be seen.

At $236, the WX Apex sits firmly in premium territory. Are they worth it? For someone who wants a single pair of glasses that can transition seamlessly from the range to daily activities, possibly. The optical clarity is exceptional, the style is on point, and the safety features are legitimate. That said, they don’t feel overpriced for what they offer, but I do wish they were more affordable for the average shooter. As a do-it-all glasses setup, they make a strong case, but the price point puts them out of reach for many casual enthusiasts.

Final Thoughts: Wiley X WX Apex Shooting Glasses

The Wiley X WX Apex delivers on its promise of being versatile glasses that work both on and off the range. The exceptional optical clarity, legitimate safety features, and stylish design are definite strong points. The downsides are few but worth noting: the tall lenses that rest on your cheeks might not be comfortable for everyone, the rear padding could be improved for extended wear, and the price point is substantial.

Apex Shooting Glasses

For those who can justify the investment, the WX Apex offers a premium glasses experience that doesn’t force you to choose between protection and style. Would I recommend them? If your budget allows and you want glasses that can pull double-duty at the range and in everyday life, they’re certainly worth considering.

Bonus mention: Wiley X offers prescription options!
