POTD: Savage Model 1907 – Pawnee Bill’s Pocket Companion
Sam.S 05.21.25

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! This extraordinary 1911 Savage Model 1907 semi-automatic pistol represents a perfect intersection of firearms innovation and Wild West showmanship. Factory documentation confirms this .32 ACP pistol was specially engraved and inscribed to Major Gordon W. “Pawnee Bill” Lillie—partner in the famous “Two Bills Show” and one of the most influential Wild West showmen in American history. The Model 1907 itself was a mechanical marvel—one of the entries in the 1907 U.S. Army pistol trials that ultimately led to the adoption of the M1911. While it didn’t win the military contract, the Model 1907’s striker-fired, delayed blowback design featuring Savage’s unique rotary magazine made it a commercial success. Its distinctive “humpback” profile and ten-round capacity made it stand out in the pocket pistol market.
This example showcases “A” or “Protector Grade” factory engraving by Savage’s Master Engraver Enoch Tue, featuring English-style scrollwork. The factory letter confirms both the engraving and the inscription “MAJOR G.W. LILLIE” on the left frame above the grip panel. It was accepted on October 28, 1911 and shipped November 2, 1911—right during the height of the “Two Bills Show” partnership between Buffalo Bill and Pawnee Bill. What makes this pistol historically significant is its connection to Savage’s marketing strategy. The company was pioneering modern celebrity endorsement campaigns in 1911, providing specially engraved firearms to figures like Buffalo Bill and Bat Masterson to promote their products. This pistol likely represents Savage’s attempt to secure Pawnee Bill’s endorsement for their growing line of self-defense pistols. The gun not only connects to America’s Wild West heritage but also documents the evolution of modern firearms marketing that continues to this day.
