Deadly YouTube Stunt: Pregnant Woman Shoots Her Man with .50-cal Pistol

A young man from Minnesota wished for fame, and got it at the cost of his life.

22-year-old Pedro Ruiz reportedly longed for stardom, so he decided to have his girlfriend shoot him with a .50-caliber handgun (update: some sources are reporting it was a Desert Eagle in 50 AE) while recording video of the act. He held a book in front of his chest, confident that it would stop the bullet.

It did not stop the bullet.

Around 6:30 Monday night, the Norman County Sheriff’s Office was called to the 500 block of U.S. Highway 75 in Halstad on a report of a shooting. When police arrived on scene they closed the stretch of Highway 75. A med helicopter was called to the scene and people watched as chest compressions on Ruiz were done. Ruiz was pronounced dead at the scene.

Although his girlfriend actually pulled the trigger, she apparently did so at his insistence. His aunt said, “He had told me about an idea and I said, ‘Don’t do it, don’t do it. Why are you gonna use a gun? Why?’ ‘Because, we want more viewers.'”

Ruiz’s aunt says he gave a 50 caliber handgun to his girlfriend and insisted she shoot it at a book Pedro was holding, thinking it would stop the bullet. They even said they tested it already.

‘I don’t know why they thought the book was supposed to stop the bullet,’ said Ruiz.

The 20-year-old woman is currently pregnant with the couple’s second child, a boy who will be named for his late father. She was jailed and charged with reckless discharge of a firearm.
