Review: Sopakco Beef Ravioli MRE

What does the Sopakco Beef Ravioli Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) taste like? While accuracy-testing a Palmetto State Armory Freedom upper receiver, I took a lunch break and tried it out.

Even though MREs are not my preferred go-to food for outdoor activities, I keep a few on hand. The all-in-one packaging makes them ideal for when you want to “grab and go,” like right before you head out to the local sand pit for target shooting.

This is a reduced-sodium beef ravioli meal. The outside of the case is marked, “Sopakco Emergency Ration Meals.” There are 14 meals in each case. The test date on the bottom of the box is October, 2021.

Full meal name: Beef ravioli in meat and textured soy protein sauce.

Unopened meal weight: One pound, 3.15 ounces.

Taste

I found the beef ravioli to be just a couple of steps above chewing a cotton t-shirt. It tasted pretty bad and I could not get over the texture. Maybe it was the textured soy protein sauce that was so bad?

The crackers were okay.

The apple jelly was the best part of the meal. It had excellent flavor, and when spread on the crackers hit the spot.

The fruit pastry was a double-packaged Kellog’s Pop Tart, something I rarely eat due to the heavy processing. So for this taste test I ate a few pieces, and it tasted just like a Pop-Tart.

Dessert was a large Tootsie Roll.

Final Thoughts

The big question is, would I buy it?

No, I would not.

I have been eating MREs for decades, and this has to be one of the worst I have ever eaten. The texture and taste of the ravioli was pretty bad. I recommend you stay far, far away from the Sopakco Beef Ravioli MRE.
