Are Gun Owners Doing Enough To Avoid Accidents?

As tragic as accidental shootings are, they should serve as a stark reminder for gun owners to keep firearms out of the reach of children. It seems every few days a story hits the news of a child finding a firearm, then shooting another child.

In this story, a four year old child found a firearm and shot a seven month old baby.

4-year-old accidentally shoots 7-month-old in Temple, police say.

TEMPLE, Texas (KWKT) — Temple police are investigating the accidental shooting of a young child Thursday afternoon.

Temple Fire and Rescue responded to the call in the 300 block of South 25th Street at 2:31 p.m.

The victim was a 7-month-old child who was reported conscious and breathing when transported to McLane Children’s Hospital.

Emergency responders were called and the baby was brought to a local hospital.

These are senseless acts which can be prevented. It is the adults responsibility to keep firearms secured and out of the reach of children.

Owning a firearm is not only a right, it is also a responsibility. We have a responsibility to ourselves, and our family, to make sure firearms are only accessible to responsible adults. There is no excuse for gun owners leaving a firearm where it can be found by a child.

Whether the firearm is under a bed, in a dresser next to the bed, tucked between the mattress and box springs, a curious child will find it.

The number of gun accidents are collected, and then used as statics to promote gun control. Some may consider this a cascade effect. Irresponsible gun owners harm everyone in the gun owning community. It is not just their family that is affected, all gun owners are affected when accidents like this happen.

However, some people are intent on keeping firearms close at hand. No amount of talking to them will change their mind.  In their opinion, they are perfectly justified in keeping a loaded handgun in the dresser next to the bed, or in a kitchen drawer orvehicle glove box, where they can be accessible to children. For example, a guy I went to high school with, his dad had a firearm in every room of the house. Then again, times have changed.

Gun owners are facing an all out war on our rights. Let’s do everything we can to protect our children, and to protect our rights.
