POTD: Not a Gun for Gophers – Never-Fail Gopher Gun

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have another POTD dedicated to a trap gun. This unique trap gun is the Never-Fail Gopher Gun. Trap guns were typically a more flashy option for getting furs back in the early decades of the 20th century. They usually operated with either blanks or very small-caliber ammunition to dispatch game. Rock Island Auction Company gives a good analysis on how this Gopher Gun works below:

“Manufactured in San Leandro, California, in the 1920s. The trap is fired by the animal striking the plate, killing the animal via the directed blast of gas towards the underbelly using a .38 S&W blank cartridge. Includes correct period box. Very good, some light oxidation in areas and some staining on the box. Needs some mechanically adjustment as the firing pin does not hold every time.”
