POTD: Scarce Alkar Cartridge Counter Semi-Automatic Pistol

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have a tiny Alkar Cartridge Counter Semi-Automatic Pistol. The Alkartasuna Fabrica De Armas company itself was founded by ex-employees of the famous Spanish Astra company. These employees decided they could make better guns than Astra was currently producing so they set up shop in the rich firearm manufacturing center of Spain: the Eibar region. Alkar and many other Spanish arms companies of the early 20th century were swept up in the small arms race of World War One. Countries would ask Spanish companies to produce copies of well-known designs in order to somewhat supply their militaries in this war of attrition. After the war ended all of these companies were basically in a sink or swim mode since they no longer had large buyers for their products. Alkar was no different and one idea was this Cartridge Counter Semi-Automatic Pistol. This little 25 ACP pistol was a generic straight blowback pistol with small yellow-tinted windows in the grip in order to give a view of the current cartridge count. The Alkartasuna Fabrica De Armas company would shortly go out of business in the early 1920s.
