POTD: Should Stick to Long Guns – Remington Rider Pocket Revolver

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have a pocket revolver that was more or less late to the revolver game. This is the Remington Rider Pocket Revolver. Remington had a habit of always being late to the handgun show back in the day. This revolver popped up in 1873. Do you know what else came out in 1873? A little gun called the Colt Single Action Army which would take over the American West for the rest of the 1800s. This particular Remington Rider Pocket Revolver is a later version that used rimfire cartridges rather than percussion.
“Manufactured in 1873. The revolver has a .32 caliber octagon barrel and five-shot cylinder. The barrel and frame are silver plated and the cylinder, hammer, and cylinder pin are gold plated. Fitted with two-piece pearl grips. The barrel has the later pin front sight and the right recoil shield has a shallow cut-out. The revolver is profusely decorated with Germanic scroll engraving on a punch-dot background with dot and zig-zag borders, possible by Master Engraver L.D. Nimschke or his shop. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend “MANUFACTURED BY REMINGTON, ILION N.Y./RIDERS. PT. AUG. 17. 1858. MAY 3. 1859.” The serial number is stamped on the underside of the barrel and on the underside of the frame ahead of the trigger. The revolver is complete with a period mahogany case with four compartments lined with red velvet. The case contains a bullet block filled with 23 .32 rimfire cartridges and a steel cleaning rod. The Remington-Rider cartridge revolver is believed to be the first American manufactured double action cartridge revolver. Deluxe engraved Remington-Rider revolvers are very rare.”
