AllOutdoor Review – Vortex Optics Defender-ST 6 MOA Micro Red Dot

The world of red dot optics, specifically related to handguns, has been growing by leaps and bounds in the past several years. The quality of optics is rising as well as the amount of options. It is still important to vet our glass for quality though because not all red dots are created equal. One company that we have been longtime followers of here at AllOutdoor is Vortex Optics. They tout the best warranty in the industry, have a wide breadth of products to choose from, and can be seen on everything from hunting sidearms to primary hunting rifles and shotguns. One of their most recent product debuts was the all-new Defender-CCW micro red dot that was announced last year at roughly this time. When we reviewed that optic we had high praise for it as a tough and trustworthy micro red dot for concealed carry purposes. Now, Vortex Optics has a “big brother” to that prior optic with their newly-debuted Defender-ST (standard red dot). Today, we will walk you through our experiences over the past 5 months and see if this is something you may want to add to your arsenal. Let’s dive in!

In the rare event that your optics should ever require service, warranty, or replacement of any kind, Vortex Optics has set the bar for customer service. The Vortex VIP Warranty is an unlimited lifetime warranty that is fully transferable to future owners of products and no receipt is needed. So, whether you gift something to a friend or pass it down to a family member, the next owner in line is still covered if a scope takes a tumble out of your pickup truck or down the side of a mountain.

What’s in the Box? – Vortex Optics Defender-ST 6 MOA Micro Red Dot

One of the many favorite things that I like about Vortex is that they openly tell you “what’s in the box” before you dive in on a purchase. You know what to expect, what you’re getting, what tools you do/don’t need to mount something; all of those things. It is a peace of mind and helpful aspect of the optic purchasing process. For this review, I mounted the Defender-ST sent out to us on a Springfield Armory Echelon. Between what Springfield supplies with their pistol and what Vortex gives you, I didn’t need to buy any additional tools or screws.

Included in the Box

  • Glock MOS Adapter Plate
  • Picatinny Mount
  • Rubber Cover
  • Lens Cloth
  • CR2032 Battery
  • Custom Tool
  • Most Common Mounting Screw Sets

Field Use – Vortex Optics Defender-ST 6 MOA Micro Red Dot

So, now that we got the low-down on all of the specs and what’s in store for you inside the box, how did it perform while in-action?… I was fortunate enough to be invited out to Vortex Optics’ headquarters to preview this micro red dot last December and put a lot of rounds down range with it at Vortex Edge – their in-house training facility. While at Vortex HQ, we ran several classes deploying the Defender-ST on various Glock handguns. Glocks might not be the best handgun out there (that’s a debate for another day), but they are so generic and common that everyone has some experience behind them.

I own 1 Glock handgun myself and found it very intuitive and easy to pick up the Defender-ST dot while on the range. The red dot was a bright, but not overpowering red dot with lots of brightness adjustment. Oddly enough, indoor ranges are some of the most poorly lit ranges because scaffolding, deflection plates, and other protective barriers overhead obstruct lighting. Nevertheless, the Defender-ST performed well at an indoor range.

Speaking from my more personal experience with this micro red dot after returning home from Vortex Edge, I appreciated the common footprint type – DPP footprint – which makes it compatible with a lot of common handguns. I had an appropriate pin set to direct mount this optic to my Springfield Armory Echelon with no issues. The Defender-ST was an easy-to-acquire sight picture on both the Glocks I ran at Vortex as well my own Echelon.

Something else that I like in a red dot for my handguns is a robust housing or body so that it can be racked against objects or simply withstand the rigors of being carried daily (and not babied). The textured front of the Vortex Defender-ST is great for racking against objects, and very durable; instilling trust in the user (unlike many fragile competing red dots on the market today).

For my accumulated time on the range across various handgun platforms, I never witnessed any edge-to-edge distortion, never a “starry” red dot (always crisp), and the zero was always consistent once established on a new platform. There is not much else you can ask of a red dot other than for it to be durable, reliable, and affordable – which the Vortex Defender-ST checks all of those boxes.

Final Thoughts – Vortex Optics Defender-ST 6 MOA Micro Red Dot

So, what are my final thoughts on the Vortex Optics Defender-ST 6 MOA Micro Red Dot?… All-in-all, this micro red dot passed every metric I wanted it to. Crisp dot… solid zero… easy to mount… all the accessories… great warranty… reliable… affordable… durable. Like I’ve said before, it does everything you want it to. If anyone is in need of a micro red dot, do not hesitate to jump on the Vortex Defender-ST.

In closing, I want to say thank you to Vortex Optics for allowing AllOutdoor and myself the opportunity to try out their Vortex Optics Defender-ST 6 MOA Micro Red Dot. That is greatly appreciated. Also, we would like to know what all of you guys and gals think? Do you believe that the Vortex Optics Defender-ST 6 MOA Micro Red Dot is something worth spending your money on?
